@awakenow9 – 18 years myself and agree. I go to meetings when I can – they don’t come first, but are still an important part of my recovery. I was stuck in Aberdeen Scotland due to the volcano for a little over a week. It was nice to find people who share the same experience strength and hope and to help the newcomer one day at a time.

@travellinman321 from ubdigger. Yes, those rooms are definitely not full saints. Me included – no one has been able to maintain perfect adherence to these principles. While I have not been party to what has been described, I have no doubt that there are some real wingnuts out there with their own version of AA that is the one and only truth and only read from the Big Book what they agree with, twist other parts and ignore yet others.

@ubdigger: What gets lost in the loaded “cult” definitions and all the crazy tangents that seem to happen in these comment boards is that AA DOES have elements of “spiritualism” and other truisms that people are expected to embrace and that people aren’t really welcome to talk about different ways to get better other than the “suggested” steps. I don’t think AA is a cult, no one has tried to hunt me down after I left. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t real problems to explore either.

Try Smart recovery if AA is nt for you . . they both work very well in different ways

@revrane I appologise. . . . But the reality is while you sit here and talk people die. . . You cannot talk facts with AA/NA members you will never convince them they are wrong. . . To many die and sufer. . Alot of these people know what they are doing and they deserve no respect. . . That is something you will learn.
