A Star Is Born – Janet Gaynor & Fredrich March (4/11)
“For every dream of yours you make come true, you’ll pay the price in heartbreak.” These are the prophetic words spoken to Esther Blodgett (Janet Gaynor) by her Grandmother Lettie the night Esther leaves for Hollywood and her journey to stardom begins. Esther soon encounters the harsh reality of Hollywood, living in a run down hotel and being frustrated at every turn to become an actress. She has one loyal friend, Danny McGuire, who helps her through this hard time and gets Ester a job as a waitress for one night where Esther meets Norman Maine (Fredric March) whose light is beginning to dim in Hollywood because of his self-destructive behavior fueled by alcoholism. The attraction is instantaneous and soon Norman convinces the studio to give Esther a screen test. From there things move quickly for Esther, now given the stage name Vicki Lester, as she and Norman make their first movie together. The movie is a huge hit for Esther and guarantees her stardom but earns bad reviews for Norman. Norman soon comes to understand that he is a has been and seeks deeper into alcoholism despite his attempts to stop drinking. Norman is happy for Esther but just can’t get past being “Mr. Lester.” His behavior finally lands him in court where he is remanded into his wife’s custody at the last second as an alternative to incarceration.
